Rick and I are going through a phase of "lets get rid of as much stuff as possible" right now. We keep realizing that there is way too much stuff in our home just sitting there that we don't use. In lieu of this, I was thinking about more ways to conserve space in our homes, offices etc. which lead me to consider how modern day technology could be a significant player.

If we store our stuff on our computers or online, we then have no excuse for it to clutter up our lives, filling the nooks and crevasses of our homes and elsewhere. It's like Rick mentioned to me as we were sorting through our omnious office (aka: our "dumping" room), if we really wanted to be extreme in going minimalist, we could just get rid of the 400-500 CD's and Books we currently carry in our bookshelves. We have all the music on our computers anyways, and we could easily obtain a Kindle and download the books instead.

My initial reaction was, yes that's true! And in a another life for me, this could be ideal. Especially if you ended up living in super constricted space. However, I felt this hollow feeling just considering loosing my precious CD collection. I love the nostalgia of have my albums in a physical format and to boot I really love the art work that comes with. As far as the books go, we got really nerdy and organized by colour-coding them - so now we have this fascinating display of books in the office. It just made me realize some things are not worth getting rid of, no matter how much sense it makes to not have them. I like to think I'm super organized person extraordinaire, but it made me realize I still have my downfalls.

i appreciate having books on the bookshelf, myself. though when tim and i recently organized our own bookshelves, i did get rid of any books that i hadn't read and had no interest in reading. and i seemed to have picked up quite a few of these from book sales. i applaud your stand to keep the books and i especially love the colour co-ordination. i may add that to my list of things to do before baby arrives.

While visually appealing, I don't think I could ever color-coordinate my books. I prefer to have them arranged by genre/subject, and occasionally go so far as to alphabetize them by author's last name.
